Ai Weiwei at the Lisson Gallery, London

Ai Weiwei at the Lisson Gallery, London: "The leading Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei has been held by the Chinese authorities without charge for more than two months now. He was arrested in Beijing as he was boarding a plane to Hong Kong on 3 April. His show at the Lisson Gallery, London, which opened in May, has gone ahead nonetheless, showing work from the past six years that typifies his attempts to affect social change in China.

Coloured Vases, 2009/2010, for instance, consist of groups of Han dynasty pots (206 BCE–220 AD) coated by Ai in industrial paint as a comment on the destruction of cultural and historical values that took place during the Cultural Revolution. Surveillance Camera, 2010, is a CCTV camera fashioned in marble. Ai recently showed his installation Sunflower Seeds in Tate Modern's Turbine Hall, and he has been made an honorary Royal Academician since he was detained.

The Lisson is supporting a petition - so far signed by more than 140,000 people - started by the Solomon R Guggenheim Foundation: www.change.org/petitions/call-for-the-release-of-ai-weiwei
